After we have learned how to do the home composting in the garden or on the terrace, what do we do with it compost? The question is relevant because after each cycle of composting of vegetable waste we have a lot of material left in the composter, and we don't always know how and where to use it correctly.
What sense does it make composting if we don't know as use the compost? Indeed it is: what makes the home composting it is not just the possibility of subtracting the vegetable fraction of waste from door-to-door collection, but also to regenerate organic matter transforming it into nourishment for new forms of life.
The composting is the most basic regeneration mechanism of nature because it allows to produce excellent fertilizer and new soil in the form of compost starting from plant waste substances. And it can be done at home, in the garden, in the courtyard or even on the balcony, as long as you have the idea of how to use compost. Here are some tips.
Don't make more compost than you can use. The advice is especially true for those who compost on the terrace by sacrificing a part of the space to composter. The sacrifice makes sense if the compost produced ends up, in the right doses of the right quality, in pots and planters: if you find yourself with excesses of compost to be disposed of, the operation loses its meaning. Sure to be able to give some to friends, but I don't know if they will be happy. Who has the composter in the vegetable garden or in the garden does not have this problem; even in this case, however, be careful or do not grease the soil too much or in the wrong way.
Compost is not all the same. The result depends on the 'ingredients' and the maturation time. If you do not want to burn the roots of the most delicate flowers and to grease the lawn you have to use compost mature for 8-10 months, if the goal is to fertilize trees, bushes and vegetables that require good nutrition, then compost 4-6 months fresh. In composter you can put all the raw vegetable organic waste from the garden and the house (no organic waste from meat, fish and cheese crusts) but it is good that they are chopped. The composter it must be loaded alternating layers of waste with soil, and the contents must be protected from rain and sun: not too wet and not too dry. If you need to speed up the process, use i bioactivators natural.
How to use fresh compost (4-6 months). For fruit trees and bushes, in autumn, in a layer of about 2 cm to be buried by raking slightly on the surface under the canopy of the tree. In the vegetable garden for cabbage, spinach, leeks, potatoes, rhubarb, celery, corn, cucurbits and tomatoes. In the dose of 3-4 kg / m2, in autumn, to be buried up to a depth of 5 cm; in winter cover with a vegetable mulch.
How to use mature compost (8-10 months). For young plants and pot plants mix with 80-50% soil by sieving by hand with a 4 mm wide mesh tool. For legumes, carrots, turnips, horseradish and salad, 1-3 kg / m2 in autumn or spring and if possible also in growth, burying superficially and often in small quantities. For the lawn, 1 kg / m2, in spring or early summer, distributing evenly. For flower beds, 1 kg / m2, in autumn or spring by burying superficially.
